O coração da obra são as 124 páginas, de um total de 216, que apresentam um retrato fiel do ex-presidente no presente contexto em formato de uma longa entrevista concedida aos jornalistas Juca Kfouri e Maria Inês Nassif, ao professor de relações internacionais Gilberto Maringoni e à editora Ivana Jinkings, fundadora e diretora da editora Boitempo. Foram horas de conversa aberta e sem temas proibidos, divididas em três rodadas, que aconteceram no Instituto Lula, em São Paulo, nos dias 7, 15 e 28 de fevereiro.

Entre os principais temas discutidos, ganha destaque a análise inédita do ex-presidente sobre os bastidores políticos dos últimos anos e o que levou o Partido dos Trabalhadores a perder o poder após a reeleição de Dilma Rousseff. Lula também fala sobre as eleições de 2018 e suas perspectivas e esperanças para o País.

Organizada por Ivana Jinkings, com a colaboração de Gilberto Maringoni, Juca Kfouri e Maria Inês Nassif – e edição de Mauro Lopes –, a obra traz ainda textos de Eric Nepomuceno, Luis Fernando Verissimo, Luis Felipe Miguel e Rafael Valim. Além disso, a edição é acrescida de uma cronologia da vida de Lula, organizada pelo jornalista Camilo Vannuchi, texto de capa do historiador Luiz Felipe de Alencastro e dois cadernos com fotos históricas, dos tempos no sindicato à presidência, passando pelas recentes caravanas e manifestações de rua.

Os termos “cosmologia” e “cosmogonia” às vezes são usados ​​de forma inconsistente nos estudos do Antigo Oriente Médio.

Cosmologia
Uma cosmologia geralmente é entendida como uma concepção do mundo e do universo, possivelmente considerada como um mapa cognitivo da Terra em relação a vários corpos celestes e outras características.

Cosmogonia
Cosmogonia, no uso científico, geralmente se refere a qualquer descrição das origens e criação do universo. Nos estudos sobre o Antigo Oriente Médio, as cosmogonias geralmente tomam a forma de textos mitológicos e, em geral, nossa evidência mais clara da cosmologia antiga vêm na forma de cosmogonias preservadas na literatura. Embora existam evidências de cosmologia presente na arte e na cultura material, as interpretações são menos claras.

Antropogonia
As cosmologias são distintas das antropogonias, que são relatos da origem – em geral, criação – dos seres humanos, embora esses tópicos separados sejam frequentemente vinculados.

Teogonia
Da mesma forma, as teogonias são relatos sobre as origens dos deuses, geralmente divindades primitivas.

Evidencias de crenças cosmológicas também podem ser encontradas em alguns textos científicos, especialmente aqueles que lidam com questões astronômicas ou que tratam do calendário. Nesses casos, no entanto, as crenças cosmológicas geralmente precisam ser inferidas, já que os autores antigos não tendem a fornecer extensas descrições para suas observações. Alguns tipos de textos de adivinhação, especialmente textos astrológicos, também fornecem evidências para concepções cosmológicas.

A relação entre cosmologia e ritual religioso é mais controversa. Os estudiosos da escola “mito e ritual” tendem a ver muitos rituais como evocação de concepções cosmológicas; outros estudiosos contestam fortemente essas ideias. The terms “cosmology” and “cosmogony” are sometimes used inconsistently within Near Eastern studies. A cosmology is usually understood to be a conception of the world and universe, possibly thought of as a cognitive map of the Earth in relation to various celestial bodies and other features. Cosmogony, in scientific use, usually refers to any account of the origins and creation of the universe. In Near Eastern studies, cosmogonies usually take the form of mythological texts, and generally, our clearest evidence of ancient cosmology comes in the form of cosmogonies preserved in literature (see also the Oxford Bibliographies article “Myth in the Hebrew Bible”). While there is evidence of cosmology present in art and material culture, interpretations are less clear-cut. Cosmologies are distinct from anthropogonies, which are accounts of the origin (usually creation) of humans, although these separate topics are often linked (for more on biblical anthropogonies, see the Oxford Bibliographies article “Adam and Eve”). Similarly, theogonies are accounts about the origins of gods, usually primeval deities. Evidence for cosmological beliefs can also be found in some scientific texts, especially those dealing with astronomical or calendrical issues. In those instances, however, cosmological beliefs usually need to be inferred, as the ancient authors did not tend to provide extensive background descriptions for their observations. Some types of divination texts, especially astrological texts, also provide evidence for cosmological conceptions. The relationship between cosmology and religious ritual is more controversial. Scholars from the “myth and ritual” school tend to see many rituals as evocative of cosmological conceptions; other scholars heavily contest these ideas. Whatever the specific relationship between myth and ritual is or was, some religious ritual texts, such as Egyptian funerary texts, certainly preserve evidence about ancient cosmology indirectly.

The archaeological study of the ancient world has become increasingly popular in recent years. A Research Guide to the Ancient World: Print and Electronic Sources, is a partially annotated bibliography. The study of the ancient world is usually, although not exclusively, considered a branch of the humanities, including archaeology, art history, languages, literature, philosophy, and related cultural disciplines which consider the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean world, and adjacent Egypt and southwestern Asia. Chronologically the ancient world would extend from the beginning of the Bronze Age of ancient Greece (ca. 1000 BCE) to the fall of the Western Roman Empire (ca. 500 CE). This book will close the traditional subject gap between the humanities (Classical World; Egyptology) and the social sciences (anthropological archaeology; Near East) in the study of the ancient world. This book is uniquely the only bibliographic resource available for such holistic coverage.

The volume consists of 17 chapters and 5 appendixes, arranged according to the traditional types of library research materials (bibliographies, dictionaries, atlases, etc.). The appendixes are mostly subject specific, including graduate programs in ancient studies, reports from significant archaeological sites, numismatics, and paleography and writing systems. These extensive author and subject indexes help facilitate ease of use.

Histórias do Antigo Oriente Médio: uma bibliografia

O primeiro número de 2019 da revista Estudos Bíblicos está sendo preparado pelos Biblistas Mineiros. Terá por tema o fundamentalismo, analisando textos de Gn 1-11 e do livro do Apocalipse. Devem ser elaborados uns 11 artigos por alguns de nós. O meu artigo será sobre as Histórias de criação e dilúvio na antiga Mesopotâmia. Por isso estou lendo ou consultando alguns textos sobre cosmogonias e outras histórias do Antigo Oriente Médio.

Publico neste post o que li recentemente sobre o tema, dividindo a bibliografia em quatro seções: arqueologia, Antigo Oriente Médio, cosmogonias mesopotâmicas e outras histórias e recursos online. Nos posts seguintes detalharei um pouco mais cada obra.  E acrescentarei aqui, nos próximos meses, outros livros que ainda devo ler.

Observo que a bibliografia está quase toda em inglês. Os recursos em português sobre os textos literários do Antigo Oriente Médio são muito limitados e alguns estão desatualizados. Umas tantas obras podem ser encontradas em espanhol.

Sobre a terminologia, gostaria de observar que o termo usual em inglês para designar a região é Ancient Near East ou Antigo Oriente Próximo. O mesmo ocorre com o italiano, Vicino Oriente antico e o francês, Proche-Orient ancien. Já em alemão o usual é Der Alte Orient, O Antigo Oriente.

“Antigo Oriente Próximo”, entretanto, não faz muito sentido para nós, pois o conceito é eurocêntrico, já que a Europa está realmente “próxima” do Oriente. Nós não estamos. Por isso prefiro falar aqui de Antigo Oriente Médio. Reconheço, entretanto, que “Oriente Médio”, entre nós, é mais empregado nos contextos políticos e jornalísticos, enquanto “Oriente Próximo” é mais utilizado em contextos arqueológicos, geográficos e históricos.

Esclareço ainda que meu conhecimento sobre o Antigo Oriente Médio é limitado, pois sou um biblista e não um assiriologista.

The Oriental Institute Open Access Publications

Including Both Digital Manifestations of Print Publications and Born Digital Publications

Starting in 2004, the Oriental Institute [of the University of Chicago] committed to digitizing all of its publications and making them available online, without charge. The minimum for each volume, old and new, current and forthcoming, will be a Portable Document Format (PDF) version following current resolution standards. New publications appear online at or near the time they appear in print. Older publications will be processed as time and funding permits. Several hundred volumes are now online.

Including twelve English, French, and German papers originally presented at a colloquium convened by Jean Kellens at the College de France (2013), this volume addresses a range of issues relating to Persian religion at the time of the Achaemenid Empire (550-330 BCE). Moving away from the reductive question whether the Achaemenid kings were Zoroastrians or not, the contributors have tried to focus either on newly identified or recently published sources (Central Asian archaeological finds, Elamite texts and seal impressions from the Persepolis Fortification Archive, Aramaic texts from Bactria, the Persepolis Bronze Plaque), or on current (and ongoing) debates such as the question of the spread of the so-called long liturgy to western Iran. In doing, different perspectives are chosen: whereas some have stressed the Iranian or Indo-Iranian tradition, others have pointed out the importance of the Elamite and Assyro-Babylonian contexts. At the same time, the volume shows a broad agreement in its insistence on the essential position of primary sources, problematic as they may be, and on the important role the Achaemenid rulers and the imperial project played in the evolution of Iranian religion.
