GRABBE, L. L. Ancient Israel: What Do We Know and How Do We Know It? London: T & T Clark, 2007, 328 p. – ISBN 9780567032546.
Ancient Israel is a tremendously informed and useful book that readers will find very helpful in a variety of contexts, whether for general pedagogical purposes or as a reader in the seminar context or as a reference tool in the research environment. It is a welcome change of course, given that progress in the field otherwise had all but become stagnant in the rather polarized, late twentieth-century world of minimalism versus maximalism (although one might aver that such a polarizing stage constitutes a predictable [and necessary?] one in the process of intellectual advancement). Readers will be immensely indebted to Professor Grabbe for Ancient Israel. It invites extensive and detailed engagement.
OAKMAN, D. E. Jesus and the Peasants. Eugene, OR : Cascade Books, 2008, 348 p. – ISBN 9781597522755. Resenha de Ernest van Eck, da Universidade de Pretória, Pretória, África do Sul. Publicada pela Review of Biblical Literature em 09/08/2008.
O resenhista termina sua avaliação assim:
The book is a tour de force of Oakman’s repertoire: the economics of first-century Palestine, his knowledge of historical Jesus studies and Q, his brilliant insights when reading the biblical text, to name but a few. His interpretations, especially of the parables, are fresh and challenging. He shows convincingly that the meanings of Jesus’ parables always have to be accessed vis-à-vis their original audience and sociopolitical and socioeconomic context. If one is interested in understanding the message of Jesus against the backdrop of the realities of first-century Palestine peasantry, this book is a must.
