Dr Ingrid Hjelm, The Carsten Niebuhr Dep., Univ. of Copenhagen, has made available an essay on Mt Gerizim and the Samaritans which will be of interest to all those engaged in study of the “intertestamental period” as we used to call it many years back. The conclusion of the essay follows: Indications are strong in favour of understanding the Persian and Hellenistic periods as formative periods for most of biblical literature. Gerizim’s role must therefore be reconsidered. The proximity of Bethel to Shechem in Samaritan traditions and in the Masoretic and Samaritan Pentateuch must be re-evaluated… (continua)
