HAMMANN, K. Hermann Gunkel – Eine Biographie. Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2014, XII + 439 s. – ISBN 9783161504464.

Diz a editora:

In the generation after Julius Wellhausen, Hermann Gunkel was one of the most important exponents of Protestant biblical studies. As one of the co-founders and main advocates of the history of religions school, he established approaches to the Old as well as the New Testament which were highly innovative from a methodological perspective. Ultimately he set a milestone in research history with each of his major publications. It is no coincidence that his commentary on Genesis and his diverse interpretations of the Psalms became classics of Protestant biblical exegesis in the 20th century. His name is inextricably linked to the examination of biblical texts from the perspective of form criticism. Drawing on previously unexplored archive material, Konrad Hammann shows the extent to which Gunkel’s life and work were part of his time and the research discourses of his profession.

The Bible’s Prehistory, Purpose, and Political Future – Jacob L. Wright – Emory University

“How and why was the Bible written? This course synthesizes fascinating recent research in biblical studies and presents a powerful new thesis: The Bible’s primary purpose is not religious but political. Facing catastrophic defeat, the biblical authors created a new form of community. Their achievements bear directly on modern questions of politics, economics, and theology.

With its walls razed to ground by Babylon’s armies, Jerusalem joined a long line of ancient vanquished cities—from Ur and Nineveh and Persepolis to Babylon itself. While some recovered from the destruction, others did not.  But none responded to political catastrophe by fashioning the kind of elaborate and enduring monument to their own downfall that we find in the Bible. Most conquered populations viewed their subjugation as a source of shame. They consigned it to oblivion, opting instead to extol the golden ages of the past.  The biblical authors in contrast reacted to loss by composing extensive writings that acknowledge collective failure, reflect deeply upon its causes, and discover thereby a ground for collective hope.

Working through colorful biblical and ancient Near Eastern texts, and drawing on an array of comparative examples, the course illustrates the thoroughgoing manner with which biblical authors responded to defeat by advancing a demotic agenda that places the community at the center. The aim of the biblical authors was to create a nation, and they sought to realize this goal via a shared text, which includes stories and songs, wisdom and laws”.

If you like watching Youtube videos, but you’d rather see them without all the additional screen clutter such as suggestions, comments, lists of other videos by the same contributor and so on, then you’ll be interested in this Hot Find. ViewPure is a web site that lets you watch your chosen Youtube video on a blank screen (you can choose black or white), with no other distractions.  Which saves your internet bandwidth, and thus makes everything cleaner and faster. To use it, just head to https://www.viewpure.com and paste the URL of the Youtube video you want to watch into the box. Then hit the button and watch in peace, on your de-cluttered screen.

Dos comentários:
A couple of alternatives are streaming Youtube vids to a standalone media player such as VLC or Pot Player, or using the Pop Video add-on for Firefox which as the name suggests pops the video out into a separate dedicated window. Quietube is similar.

O discurso do ódio contaminou a cultura.

The key problem is that the description of the movements of the Star is outside what is physically possible for any observable astronomical object

Aaron Adair publicou, agora em fevereiro, em The Bible and Interpretation, artigo, no qual mostra como a astronomia tem falhado em suas tentativas de explicar a estrela de Belém.

Leia: Star Light, Star Bright: How Astronomy Fails to Explain the Star of Bethlehem

E há o livro do autor:

ADAIR, A. The Star of Bethlehem: A Skeptical View. Fareham: Onus Books, 2013, 168 p. – ISBN 9780956694867.

The Star of Bethlehem: A Skeptical View is an analysis of the astronomical portent found in the Gospel of Matthew which supposedly led the Magi from the East to the birthplace of Jesus. Throughout history, people have tried to connect the Star to real, naturalistic phenomena, as well as to explain it in other ways. Adair takes a thorough look at all of these explanatory attempts, using the tools of science and astronomy, and finds them fundamentally wanting. Take a trip through the heavens above with Adair as he critically explores many centuries of flawed hypotheses, looking to answer the question “Did the Star of Bethlehem really exist?” This book is at the conjunction of science and religion.
