Notwithstanding the various concerns expressed above, I consider this volume a most welcome addition to the WATSA series and to the extant range of publications pertaining to the historical Jesus. A feature I find particularly appealing is Gowler’s emphasis on the relevance of the historical Jesus for Christian faith, and I appreciate his reference to John 1:38–39a at the beginning and end of his text (2, 144), to form an inclusio. As he states, “[the] historical Jesus still challenges our hearts, minds, and imaginations, and, as we search for ‘where he is staying,’ he is there before us, dialogically inviting us to ‘Come andsee’ ” (144). While the constraints under which Gowler was working meant that he could not cover the field as comprehensively as he would have liked (ix), he nevertheless showed wisdom in his selection of key scholars. The book provides a valuable overview of contemporary research on the subject, and I strongly recommend it as an introductory volume for students and others who are seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus of Nazareth, his ministry, and his mission.

Especialmente quando ele enfatiza a necessidade de uma cristologia fundada sobre um conhecimento mais sólido do Jesus Histórico, que, no documento de Aparecida, segundo Comblin, é um ponto fraco:
A questão é: o que significa a humanidade de Jesus? Qual é o significado das palavras e dos atos de Jesus tais como os evangelhos os relatam? Em que consiste a humanidade de Jesus? O que é ser homem? O texto lembra muitas coisas bonitas tiradas dos evangelhos, que o mostram como mestre de sabedoria e revelador de um modo de vida a ser imitado pelos discípulos. É uma enumeração de atos e palavras belas da vida de Jesus. Falta a síntese e o que reúne todos esses ditos e fatos numa vida humana (129-135). Esta enumeração não diz o significado da vida humana de Jesus, ou seja do seu ministério missionário. A vida dos seres humanos deve interpretar-se a partir do contexto histórico em que ela se situa. Aqui não se fala do contexto histórico, como se Jesus estivesse fora da história, como um mestre que voa acima dos séculos.
