Os primeiros cristãos ampliaram as histórias do nascimento e da infância de Jesus e de Maria, sua mãe. Seus relatos, muitos deles encontrados hoje em dia entre coleções de textos não canônicos (‘apócrifos’), são importantes e interessantes. Eles fornecem informações sobre o crescimento da teologia cristã, especialmente no que diz respeito ao papel e status de Maria, e também à maneira como as primeiras histórias foram elaboradas e interpretadas na religião popular.

Uma série dos mais antigos relatos é apresentada aqui em traduções atualizadas. Esta segunda edição contém alguns textos originalmente em várias línguas diferentes, como armênio, etíope, copta e irlandês, não disponíveis na época da primeira edição. Os textos são organizados em pequenas unidades e sinoticamente, de forma a permitir que os leitores comparem os textos e vejam as diferenças e semelhanças entre eles.

J. K. Elliott selecionou e organizou os textos e fornece capítulos introdutórios e finais. Ele também inclui uma bibliografia completa e útil para beneficiar os leitores que desejam aprofundar este estudo comparativo.

 

Early Christians built on the stories of Jesus’ and Mary’s birth and childhood. Their later accounts, many of them found nowadays among collections of non-canonical (‘apocryphal’) texts, are important and interesting. They give insights into the growth of Christian theology, especially concerning the role and status of Mary, and also the way in which the earliest stories were elaborated and interpreted in popular folk religion. A range of the earliest accounts is presented here in fresh translations. This second edition contains some texts originally in a variety of different languages such as Armenian, Ethiopic, Coptic and Irish, not available at the time of the first edition. The texts are arranged in small units and synoptically, in order to permit readers to compare texts and to see the differences and similarities between them. J.K. Elliott has selected and arranged the texts, and he provides introductory and concluding chapters. He also includes a full and helpful bibliography to benefit readers who may wish to pursue this comparative study more deeply.

This bibliography is a comprehensive listing of books, facsimiles, collations and articles relating to some 3,500 Greek New Testament manuscripts, including references to photographic plates and albums. These are divided into the conventional categories of papyri, majuscules, minuscules and lectionaries, as classified in the current Gregory-Aland register. This third revised edition supersedes the two previous editions. Entries from those earlier editions and from three supplements, published as articles in Novum Testamentum, as well as newly published material, are to be found here.

For over a quarter of a century, Elliott’s Bibliography has rendered sterling service to the text-critical community in providing details of secondary literature arranged  by  New  Testament  manuscript. The  fifteen  years  since  the  publication of its second edition have witnessed a resurgence of interest in this discipline, stimulated in part by new scholarly approaches, the use of computers for textual  editing,  and  the  proliferation  of  digital  images  of  manuscripts  on  the  internet.  With  almost  half  as  many  pages  again,  this  expanded  third  edition  bears witness to the recent increase in activity. In addition, further witnesses continue to be identified: the new Bibliography treats 157 more entries in the Gregory-Aland Liste than its previous edition (H.A.G. Houghton, Novum Testamentum 58 (2016) 422.
