Those Elusive Sons of God: Genesis 6:1–4 Revisited – By Jaap Doedens – The Bible and Interpretation – April 2019
Since the beginning of the 20th century, and especially after the numerous discoveries of similar expressions in extrabiblical texts, mainstream exegesis returned to a ‘superhuman’ interpretation of the ‘sons of God’ in Gen 6:1–4. Yet now they were not viewed as (fallen) angels, but as ‘divine beings’, or deities (…) This newer exegetical solution is most probably the correct one.
Is it possible to discover an historical kernel of this narrative about marriages of divine beings and human women resulting in the birth of giant heroes? The origin of this narrative could perhaps be connected with the presence of megalithic tombs, mainly in the Transjordan region, the so called dolmens, dating from the end of the third and the beginning of the second millennium BCE. It is reasonable that, because of their mere size, these monumental structures gave rise to tales about giant fallen warriors. Somehow, one of these tales made its way into the biblical narrative, and became part of a theological framework elucidating humanity’s fate with all its trial and error.

DOEDENS, J. The Sons of God in Genesis 6:1–4: Analysis and History of Exegesis. Leiden: Brill, 2019, 372 p. – ISBN 9789004284265.
In The Sons of God in Genesis 6:1–4, Jaap Doedens offers an overview of the history of exegesis of the enigmatic text about the ‘sons of God’, the ‘daughters of men’, and the ‘giants’. First, he analyzes the text of Gen 6:1–4. Subsequently, he tracks the different exegetical proposals from the earliest exegesis until those of modern times. He further provides the reader with an evaluation of the meaning of the expression ‘sons of God’ in the Old Testament and the Ancient Near East. In the last chapter, he concentrates on the message and function of Gen 6:1–4. This volume comprehensively gathers ancient and modern exegetical attempts, providing the means for an ongoing dialogue about this essentially complex and elusive passage.

HJELM, I. ; TAHA, H. ; PAPPE, I. ; THOMPSON, T. L. (eds.) A New Critical Approach to the History of Palestine: Palestine History and Heritage Project 1. Abingdon: Routledge, 2019, 400 p. – ISBN 9780367146375.
A New Critical Approach to the History of Palestine offers a comprehensive, evidence-based history of Palestine with a critical use of recent historical, archaeological and anthropological methods. This history is not an exclusive history, but one that is ethnically and culturally inclusive, a history of and for all peoples who have lived in Palestine. After an introductory essay offering a strategy for creating coherence and continuity from the earliest beginnings to the present, the volume presents twenty articles from 22 contributors, 16 of whom are of Middle Eastern origin or relation.
Split thematically into four parts, the volume discusses ideology, national identity and chronology in various historiographies of Palestine and the legacy of memory and oral history; the transient character of ethnicity in Palestine, and questions regarding the ethical responsibilities of archaeologists and historians to protect the multi-ethnic cultural heritage of Palestine; landscape and memory, and the values of community archaeology and bio-archaeology; and an exploration of the “ideology of the land” and its influence on Palestine’s history and heritage.
The first in a series of books under the auspices of the Palestine History and Heritage Project (PaHH), the volume offers a challenging new departure for writing the history of Palestine and Israel throughout the ages. A New Critical Approach to the History of Palestine explores the diverse history of the region against the backdrop of twentieth century scholarly construction of the history of Palestine as a history of a Jewish homeland, with roots in an ancient, biblical Israel, and examines the implications of this ancient and recent history for archaeology and cultural heritage. The book offers a fascinating new perspective for students and academics in the fields of anthropological, political, cultural and biblical history.

James Swetnam’s Introduction to the Study of New Testament Greek has become a classic. Generations of students at both the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, in addition to other institutions across the globe, have profited from Swetnam’s text. Randy Soto’s companion lexicon will make Swetnam’s Introduction now even more accessible. Consequently, the student of New Testament Greek owes a debt of thanks to both Swetnam and Soto.
An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament Greek.

Jesus and the Pharisees – An Interdisciplinary Reappraisal
International Conference – May 7-9, 2019
On the Occasion of the 110th Anniversary of the Biblical Institute’s Founding, May 7, 1909
The international conference Jesus and the Pharisees: An Interdisciplinary Reappraisal brings together Jewish, Protestant, Catholic, and other scholars from Argentina, Austria, Canada, Colombia, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, and the United States.
The conference first deals with the possible origins and meanings of the name “Pharisee” in different languages. It then examines the various ancient sources about the Pharisees (Josephus, Qumran, archaeological data, the New Testament, and Rabbinic Literature).
After a round table discussion of the results concerning the “historical” Pharisees, the second part of the conference will be devoted to the Wirkungsgeschichte (history of interpretation and its effects), from Patristic Literature, to Medieval Jewish interpretations, to Passion Plays, the Movies, Religion Text Books, and Homiletics. In the end, we will look at possible ways to represent the Pharisees less inadequately in the future.
Speakers:
The entire conference will be held in English, except for the concluding session on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 pm, where simultaneous translation into Italian and English will be available.
The conference will be web streamed live and subsequently uploaded on YouTube.
In the morning of Thursday, May 9, a special audience with Pope Francis has been arranged for participants duly registered for the entire conference.
– 3 aprile 2019)

The Bible and Interpretation – April 4, 2019
Although King David is one of the richest and most varied literary figures of the Bible, we have no direct historical evidence that he ever existed. Neither archaeology nor any contemporary written inscriptions proves the existence of such a king, ruling in Hebron or Jerusalem during the 10th century BCE. Archaeological evidence for ancient settlements of the Judean highlands hardly support the existence of even a small kingdom in this region, let alone a multi-regional state and monarchy. Archaeology has not yet found any settlement in Jerusalem, significant enough to be the capital of a small patronage kingdom, let alone an empire. Nor has archaeology found any widespread agricultural settlement in the southern highlands, which could have supported a functioning kingdom during the period that the Bible gives to David. There is also no known historical kingdom of Judah before the late-9th century, BCE. The David we know from the Bible as a literary figure, on the other hand, embraces, as we will see, a considerable range of themes, and is, perhaps, the richest figure in biblical literature.
All the historical evidence we have that might be linked to the biblical figure of David comes from three fragments of a late 9th century, Aramaic inscription, found during the excavations of Tall al-Qadi in the Jordan rift, which both mentions a king of Israel and, the name bytdwd (continua).

One of the impressive features of the series is the fact of its intentional hybridity. While megachurch pastor Joel Osteen served as the Executive Producer of the series, the contributions of such first-rate biblical scholars as Robert Cargill, Mark Goodacre, Nicola Denzey Lewis, and Michael Peppard give this series a robust reasoned gravitas, including also the pastoral insights of such ministerial standouts as Pastor Susan Parks, Reverend Otis Moss, III, Father James Martin, SJ, and Bishop Michael Curry. The hybridity works well, and the making of meaning is well founded, based upon solid historical-critical research and inferences.
:: “Jesus: His Life—Perspectives of Joseph and John the Baptist” – By Paul N. Anderson: The Bible and Interpretation – March 2019
As the calendar approaches Easter, made-for-television movies and documentaries appear on the History Channel, CNN, the National Geographic Channel, and other venues; and, why not? Christianity is the largest religion in the world, and there’s a great deal of interest within society at large, as well as among the believing faithful. As Robert Cargill points out in the introit to Jesus: His Life, “The Story of Jesus is the greatest story ever told.” Or, as Ben Witherington III notes, “If we want to understand western civilization at all, we must understand the story of Jesus.” In that sense, this eight-part series on Jesus and his life is of interest both to believers and others, and the series produced by Nutopia for the History Channel the four Monday evenings before Easter is certainly worth taking in. As the series claims for itself, “Jesus: His Life” explores the story of Jesus Christ through a unique lens: the people in his life who were closest to him. Each of the eight chapters is told from the perspective of different biblical figures, all of whom played a pivotal role in Jesus’ life including Joseph, John the Baptist, Mary Mother of Jesus, Caiaphas, Judas Iscariot, Pontius Pilate, Mary Magdalene and Peter.

:: ‘Jesus: His Life’: a fresh take on the world’s most studied character – By John Anderson: America – March 22, 2019
There is only one narrative that can lay claim to being “the greatest story ever told” and we hear that very phrase, immediately and perhaps predictably, at the beginning of “Jesus: His Life,” the eight-part History series beginning on Monday, March 25. Who can argue? Well, as it happens, some of the people who appear in the show. Much about this ambitious series, produced by the U.K.-based Nutopia studio (“Finding Jesus,” “Civilisations”), hews to the established History aesthetic: Dramatic re-enactments that no one will ever confuse with the work of Cecil B. DeMille and background music that roils and swells like an angry Red Sea. But there is also an intellectual integrity at work, and a structure that provides a fresh way of looking at the world’s already most studied life.
Andei lendo outras coisas que encontrei em simples busca no Google por “Jesus his life review”. Dizem, por exemplo:
According to History, the project represents an effort to tell Jesus’ story “in a new way.” Yet “Jesus: His Life” basically feels like a classic example of one of Hollywood’s most familiar pursuits — namely, merely serving old wine in a new bottle (Brian Lowry, CNN)
But the History Channel isn’t just out to inspire the faithful: It aims to entertain the masses, too. And as such, the story of Jesus’ life can sometimes take on a more breathless, action-packed aura than the biblical accounts strictly call for. The raw emotions we see here would feel more at home in a CW soap than a sober examination of history (Paul Asay, Plugged In)

On its salty surface, the Dead Sea is famous for making giddy tourists float like beach balls. Hundreds of feet below the water, however, life is a little less fun. There, choked by some of the saltiest water on Earth, single-celled microorganisms called archaea struggle to carry out life’s basic functions without oxygen, light or fresh forms of sustenance. According to a new study published March 22 in the journal Geology, the survival of microbial life beneath the Dead Sea may have once even depended on eating the dead.

:: Cambridge University and Vatican manuscripts made public online – BBC News – 28 March 2019
Hundreds of medieval Greek manuscripts held by Cambridge and Heidelberg universities and the Vatican are to be made available to the public online. The £1.6m project will digitise more than 800 volumes featuring the works of Plato and Aristotle, among others. The manuscripts date from the early Christian period to the early modern era (about 1500 – 1700 AD). Cambridge University said the two-year project would open up “some of the most important manuscripts” to the world. Works set to be digitised include “classical texts and some of the most important treatises on religion, mathematics, history, drama and philosophy”, a university spokesman said. The manuscripts are currently held at the university library, 12 of its colleges, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Heidelberg University Library in Germany and the Vatican Library in Rome.
